Last weekend Lil Kahuna went all out for the kids. Started off on Friday by taking my 5 year old daughter out to catch some inshore fish. Fished Perdido and Maggie caught sailcat, croaker, ground mullet, and skipjack.
It won't be long and that princess pole will be replaced with a gold 50W!!! Skipjack... At BHFR weigh in. After that I switch gears, put up the princess pole and start loading up the 50s and bottom yankers. Hit the PBGFC juniors tournament with Craig's kids in tow. Fishing the juniors we had Shane, Rachel, and Ilanea. Headed offshore right after the capts meeting and headed for Petronius. Our strategy (gotta love it...formulating a strategy for jr tournament) was to target the less desirable including King Mack and Bonito. We figured most would target the high society species (wahoo, marlin, tuna, dolphin). Got to p-town thinking we could load down with blackfin. Not happening. We did find massive schools of large hardtails. Bonus as hardtails are a category for BHFR. Tried for a few hours trying to catch a blackfin but no luck. Moved off to some deep rocks. Find out the current is ripping. Like I've never seen before. It took a 3lb weight just to get to the bottom. There was no way I was going to hold the boat and have the kids fish in 240' of water. Wasn't going to work. Decided to throw the anchor and work the surface. Thank god the anchor hung perfectly with the first try. Once anchored the current was running so fast it was like we were on the troll. I broke out our largest rapala and stretch 30 and let'em out. They worked like a charm with the swift moving current. It wasn't seconds and we had nice kings skying on the lures. All the kids caught some real nice kings. Bonito also showed in force. Perfect. Plan is coming together. Stayed for a while and picked up a real nice red grouper, tile fish, white snapper, and copious amounts of Kings. Once it started heating up we decided to pull anchor and troll the 29-fathom contour. An hour into trolling green water we hook and caught a 15lb wahoo. A little while later we lost a decent barracuda. Ended the day early and made it back to the scales around 4PM. Here's the results. BHFR: 1st Junior Hardtail, 1st Junior Grouper, 1st Junior Wahoo, 1st Junior King, and Princess (largest fish caught by a Junior) PBGFC JR Billfish: 1, 2, 3rd place King and 1st and 2nd place Bonito Thanks to GLYC and PBGFC for putting on these tournaments. What a great weekend. Keith, Lil Kahuna |

Great report. The Hargreaves has a great schedule and is run by friendly staff.
