I've been waiting for water conditions like now all year and the trophy size tunas are a no show. I had a crew from Atlanta / Alabama for a overnighter 18 - 19 hoping for Swordfish/big Tuna. We started late around 4 and it was bumpy the whole way. We arrive west of the elbow and it looks fishy with flyers in Blue water. All we get are Blackfins toward the steps. By the Way, I've never seen so many bft as I was marking Blackfins almost the whole way. We pull up to Petronius around 7 and land a small yft.
We caught good bft on jigs for an hour and the big boys never showed. I believe that the bft were so large in number that other plegics went else where for food. I could only imagine Marlin wanting to play around this area. So after that we try to swordfish around my normal area near the steps and I can't find bottom. The bft were so thick, my sonar keep marking bottom at 16 - 80 feet. All my squids were getting mauled my the bft to a point, I quit trying. After another bft and a shark, I went to bed. Next morning we caught 5 more small yft, 4 skip jack tuna and 5 large bft. At the Marlin rig, we lost some good yft to sharks. The sharks were coming off the rig and messing with us all day. Our highlight of the trip happened on our way back. They wanted some Amberjack and we ended up with a reef mule! What a fish and a new boat record. I hope the big tunas show up soon and the pesky bft would move out of the step. I'm still swordless for this year and it's killing me. Jeff Choe |

Jeff, stud donkey, glad I did not hook it! Man where are the YF...DWN was calling, but we stayed at Horn for 7 hours with no luck. A couple of Venice boats were at Horn, so my guess the YF were scarce. Saw some nice frigates eating the flyers that were scared from below, but couldnt get anything to get interested in our assortment. Really only saw three fifty # jump before sunset. They will show up. Pm us next time we can split up and cover more area....Swordies will be coming over your gunnel in force this fall
