Default octogon pier

took my daughter with me today to see if we could repeat yesterday's luck. nope. got there about 2:30 in the afternoon. saw about 4 mullet fishermen out there total. only one had any in his bucket. water wasn't as low as i thought it would be, so we were still hopeful. hard to catch bait, but finally caught a small menhaden, a lemon sized pinfish, and an ly on sabiki rig. we threw out the pinfish and floated the ly about 3 feet below a float. about 3:00, a big red inhaled the pinfish and started to head for the pass. never saw this one, but it bent my rod double what the one yesterday did and stripped line like crazy, even with the drag cranked as much as i dared. (Okuma 7ft salina combo walmart special on clearance) same rod i took the red on yesterday. this thing just kept going and i was starting to see the bottom of the spool.finally started to slow down and thought we might have a chance, but then he must have ducked behind a rock or something cuz the line got cut. got back most of the line, but the end where he cut it was really roughed up. so, we caught another pinfish on sabiki and tried again. my daughter did a good job, there wasn't anything i would have done differently myself.

had to use the portapottys waaaaayy over in the parking lot about 3:30 and was heading back when i could see my daughter fighting another fish on the ly. bunch of people looking over the rail, so i tried to make it back to help her with the pier net (if needed) just as my foot hit the base of the pier, i saw the leader pop straight up into the air. fish off! i never saw it, but the people watching her fight it said it came off at the pier and they all saw it.... a great big flounder! on a floating ly! she was pretty disappointed. so was i. funny thing, the pier net was sitting on the dock. i guess people were too excited to think of grabbing. oh well.

we couldn't catch any more bait, so i threw out a jig head with a rubber shad on it. i guess it looks like an ly.... we were able to catch a 13" flounder, and lost another one same size. called it a day at about 4. at least we didn't get skunked, and my daughter got to fight what would have been a nice red.

sounds likely. i dunno... never caught a shark so i have no experience with them. i'll just let my daughter keep thinking that it was a red... she was so excited. thanks for letting me know that sharks do that. um, how do i prevent that? (the tail whipping and breaking of the line thing) braid? longer leader?

Longer leader. I use a 6' leader for sharks when I'm casting, 15-20' when yakin.
