We left out after it warmed up a bit, and finally made it out the pass around 9:30 or so. We ran out about 20 miles to a hole i knew would be holding ajs. We stopped by a nearby hole and picked up some live bait(ie squirrel fish & pogies). We set up drift over the aj hole, and the first time i sent my jig down, wham, got him to the boat, 31" aj on 1 hook, 22" aj on the other stinger hook. So 1 aj goes in the box. We thought this would be good, pick up a couple of more aj's and move on to some grouper huntin. Well about this time another boat pulls up, and proceeds to anchor on the hole, so we thought we would do the same, so we pulled up and anchored, we were about 30 feet off their port side. For the next hour, everytime i sent the jig down, up came a 22-26" aj, and sometimes 2 at a time. Then after my arm starting to turn to spaghetti, I started lettingmy 7yo son reel asome in. Now meanwhile, my buddy Bill hasnt got anything to the boat, 1 broken knot with a jig, and a missed hit on a live bait, but thats it. The same goes for the boat we were beside. I saw them bring 1 undersize aj to the boat, then they just sat in disbelief that I constantly had a bent rod. The looks on their face were priceless, but i would have had the same one if it was me. Then at 1pm, it seemed as if the gulf just completely shut down. Not another AJ, so we moved to numerous otherholes, nada, zilch, not evena nibble, no snapper,no grouper, no squirrell fish, nothing whatsoever even existed anymore,so we worked our way in checking out 4 or 5 more holes with nothing, and got back to the dock at about 5.
Beautiful day on the water, and nice to be back out. Wound up with 1 aj, a dozen white snapper, 1 trigger. |
