Default Report 1-3-09

Kind of a late start this morning due to the fog. I overnighted a Fort Mcree and got up around 6:30 to the site of "pea soup". Couldn't see from one side of the inlet to the other.I decided to wait it out and got another hour or so of sleep. It finally lifted enough by around 9:00 - 9:30and I set out.

Since the forcast was callng for some nasty weather moving in later in the afternoon I decided to stay kinda close and only ventured out to some of the reefs about 10 miles out. Couldn't come up with any live bait so I had to rely on some frozen bait that I had brought along mainly to just get it out of my freezer. The second drop of the day yielded a real nice grouper off of a year old frozen thread-fin. Caughtseveral more short grouper, enough endangered red snapper to sink my boat, one keeper trigger fish and several shorts, one keeper red drum (in 90 feet of water!?), one keeper white snapper, and one shark. Also picked up a bonita while jigging which willrefill the hole left in my freezerby the old bait that I took on this trip.

The only downside to the trip was loosing the anchor which was claimed by the "Phillip Reef". Oh well, it was bound to happen sooner or later I guess.

thats why you connect the chain to the other end of the anchor and zip tie it a few times where you would normally attach it but verrry nice catch!!

You're right. I use to do my anchors that way on my old 19 foot boat but was afraid it wouldn't work with the larger boat due to it not being able to withstand the normal stresses. I guess several zip ties or maybe a piece of ss wire would work. Ijust got too confident with the anchor ballseeing ashowI hadn't lost one inover 5 years. My next anchor will be rigged that way.

Cool idea, I hadn't heard of that, which I guess explains my buying new rope and chain about once a year.....thanks for the tip!

And nice catch! Wish my little boat could get out there!

I really don't mean to be a butt head, and don't mean to come down on somebody for what would be an honest mistake. But I don't think your suppose to keep a redfish in federal waters, 9+ miles out. Someone please correct me if I'm wrong. I just wouldn't what someone to get popped with a ticket and not have a heads up.

Withoutpleading guilty or anything:angel..is it common to catch redfish 9+ miles off-shore? I had always though of them as being an inshore species and didn't think to lookfor them in thefederal regs.Ignorance is no excuse, thanks for the education.:bowdown

I was out earlier in the week near the edge and the boat next to me landed a nice slot and he threw it in his fish box...I asked the same about federal waters and he replied that slot is slot regardless federal or not...He was so confidentthat federal law imulated state law regarding slot redsI mayhave followed suit iflanded one...Thanks for the clarification.
