Birthday Trigger trip 1-28-58

Captain's choice on his birthday :-) stash was getting low, and I like me some trigger!

Brent, Rick and Troy showed up a little after 600 and we beat the sunrise West bound down the ICW. The plan was to put some trigger and scamp meat in the box - so rather than just jigs I put a little frozen squid on board. We started fishing 25 miles to the SSW - on a few spots I had had bagged a few triggers before. The Gulf was lumply 1-2 once out 15 miles or so - made a steady 26 knots. out 30 miles or so the water temp was a nice 67 with lots of weeds.

We fished with either small diamond jigs or chicken rigs on spinning gear - light leads - small hooks and postage stamp cuts of squid.
Still had plenty of good sized snapper

The first stop had plenty of triggers - just several 13.5 inchers - on the way to some rocks , I stumbled up on a stack of fish- then it was on!

Troy was the trigger master... frequently getting doubles - though sometimes it was a snapper and trigger. Brent worked the diamond jig and got fewer - though bigger - triggers .

Several big sharks we around most spots - I think we had at least one snapper chopped at three stops.

With a couple of dozen triggers from 2 - 6 lbs on board - we pushed east into deeper water - we picked a few mingos and then a a scamp or two off a rock - Scamp bite was a little slow - but we were just using jigs.
got our four AJs on speed jigs - all in 32"- 36" fork- and plenty of throw backs then headed North. Trimmed up we made 28 -to 30 knots in the dimminishing seas.

24 triggers
8 scamp
4 AJ 1 almaco
Mix of mingos & whites and a lane

Not a bad meat trip for January and excluding gags & snaps!

AHHHHH, Mullethead!!! That's a box of fish for any month. Sho nuff nice for Janurary though. Very nice work. Thanks for sharing and Happy Birthday.
