Default 5-17-08 bottom bumping

Got to the ramp early to try to beat the crowds. There was already several people at the ramp waiting but there was still plenty of parking. Loaded up on pinfish on the way out. It was pretty rough first thing so we stopped at a spot about halfway to where we wanted to be. There wasn't much happening at this spot so as soon as the waves died down a little we continued on East to the Timberholes. The bite was good but most of the fish were short. Duayne caught 5 or 6 Red Grouper but none were big enough to keep. We also caught some AJ's but they were short as well. Duayne was reeling in a Snapper and it got ate on the way up. He fought it for a while and up pops a Sea Turtle.

Just after I took that pic the Turtle let go of the Snapper and swam off. And this is what it's like to be Turtle food.

Shortly after the Turtle encounter we had a school of 5-6 ft Sharks swim by the boat in formation. We threw some chum at them but they weren't interested and kept on going. A few seconds later a couple more swam up from the same direction. One of them and another smaller Shark stayed for a little while. We hooked up the smaller Shark and took a few pic's.

After releasing the Shark we got on a decent Mingo bite. Unfortunately the Dolphins wanted them more than we did and all we could come up with was Mingo lips.:banghead After they stole 6 or 7 Mingo's we decided not to encourage them so we picked up anchor and headed for the Edge. The bite was on fire at the Edge. We were catching lots of football Mingo's and some big Triggers. We also missed a few Grouper bites and picked up a keeper Scamp and a small Speckled Hind.

Duayne also got schooled by something large. He had the 6/0 with a large live bait down. Something grabbed the bait, doubled over the rod, stripped a bunch of drag then straightened out the 9/0 hook. By then it was getting late so we headed in to our Snapper hole in State waters. The Snapper were on fire as usual and we limited out in a few minutes.

I dumped all the fish on the deck for a quick pic then we headed in.

Final tally: 30 Mingo's, 6 Red Snapper, 10 Triggers (biggest 4.75lb), 1 Scamp, 1 Speckled Hind, and a few White Snapper. It was a nice day in the Gulf. The fish were biting good and the seas died down by mid afternoon. I got Duayne to drive the boat in while I relaxed on the bean bag for a change.
