Small hooks and fish like you would for snapper near the bottom. Anywhere from 50ft on down.

Thanks OP**,

I'm doing that.....and, if ruby lips were a nickle a pound, I'd be wealthy......

Next trip, I'm gonna try out a little deeper...... maybe 90 -- 100 ft.

Ruby red lips taste just like trigger and are more easily cleaned!! (they eat the same stuff)

I agree. Ruby red lips are every bit as good as triggerfish. However, I do not take them home; too small. Funny, though, we used to catch pan fish when I was young and they were not any larger, but we ate tons of them. Three years ago, I went to Brazil and one weekend fished a river (not the Amazon). We caught mainly fish 3 or 4 inches long. We gave them to the cook and she fried them up and brought them out 20 minutes later. Delicious. Big fish were caught at night, but we did not fish then since it interferred with drinking time.

As for depth, Ive caught triggers 10 feet under the boat. They will hang higher in the column if they know the bait is coming down. I like catching the larger ones and letting them dig for about 20' before beginning to reel them up. I don't know about rubies... they are the same fish as grunts in the Keys, and I don't like them anymore than I do porgie. yeck..
