Default Trigger fish

I have a friend coming to town Sunday who loves trigger fish, but I do not really know how to target them. How far out do I need to go and what do you look for - wreck - hard bottom? What rig and bait would you suggest.

Hard bottom, artificial reefs. We had some luck between 85 ft and 140 ft. Two hook rig with three 4 to 6 inch dropper loops with small circle hooks about 16 inches apart. Cut squid strips or squares maybe 3/4 x 1. Don't "hide" the hook in the bait. 8 oz or so weight on bottom of rig. Drop fast to bottom and reel up slowly. The more you fish the higher in the water column they will come. Biggest ones are usually higher from the bottom. You will catch at least 10 or 12 13 3/4 inchers before you catch a 14' keeper but it will be fun. They are the best fish at stealing bait so learn what a hit feels like to increase your hookup ratio. Keep your line coming in and usually they will hook themselves. Have fun!

i kill triggers on the shimano lucanus jig tipped with squid.

also a lighter rod like a teramar will help you feel the bite.

They will also respond well to chum,

like to the point where you can see them at the boatside.

i catch them close to shore on the orcks out side of destin.

5 to 6 mile out.

good luck
