Default Which reel

Looking at a reel that will be used for trolling, light bottom fishing and chucking at the cobia. I'm fishing from a kayak or a smaller boat going out up to 5 miles or so in the Gulf.

I found a 6000 sustain FE or a 6000 stradic FI for the same price or for $30 more I could get a 8000 Stradic FJ. Which do you think would be most suitable for what I'm trying to do?

Thanks

8000 spooled with 30-50lb braid would be pretty versatile. The Stadic FJ is totally sweet. Personally, I use cheaper Shimanos in my yak because I'm afraid of losing them in the surf and dunking them. Spheros is a solid reel and a good value. I bring my good shit out when I'm fishing from a boat.

I caught cobia, king, and monster reds on my 4000 Sahara and 20lb braid. A 6000 is a great all around size and with 30lb braid you can stop just about anything out to 5 miles. I read that the stradics have trouble when they get wet. FishGolfDrink makes a good point with the spheros. Great reels!

Have you looked at the saragosa 6000. Very nice awesome drag. For casting I like the suffix 832.

No problems with braid binding as long as i put it on real tight. I like Sufix Performance but lately Ive been using Lucky Dolphin PE Dyneema from ebay. Caught several nice AJs with it using pretty high drag pressure. For the price of a 300y sufix spool you can get 1000y of the ebay braid. You just have to be patient with the shipping. Usually takes a month.

My Stradic 5000FJ just came in the mail. It is sweeeet!

Capt Trey- My heavy set up is the saragosa 8000 on a MH terez, I just got it a last week and haven't used it yet. What type of fish have you been able to tackle with your saragosa?

Xpac-Thanks for the heads up on the line. Are you planning for nearshore type of fishing with the stradic?

I keep flip flopping on the choice, I would like to go with a 5000 because I'm normally in a kayak and smaller is better but I think that I might need the added capacity of a 6 or 8000.

Thanks for the replies

The stradic will be used for near shore (macks, snapper) and offshore for throwing live bait and lures for BFT, snapper, dolphin and I won't be able to resist dropping a small 5oz jig on some ajs . Should be interesting to see how it holds up.

I'd be interested on hearing how the reel holds up throughout the season. What rod are you pairing it up with?
