Default Newbie looking for some good info

I'm brand new to the area and have been fishing all my life. The problem is I've been freshwater fishing. I've never been fishing in saltwater. My wife and I just moved into the area and have steady access to fishing boats and I really want to learn the ins and outs of it all. Right now the only thing my gear consists of is a brand new rod and a net.

What kind of tackle would I need for this area?

What types of fish are typically found around here?

Where's a good place to start looking?

I'm really looking for any and all good information/advice that's out there. If anyone feels like taking a trip out on the water to fish I'd be more than willing to go out and learn, I'll buy the beer.

that's a lot to answer in one go, but I'll try to get you aimed in the right direction. I just hope it won''t look like a Chihuahua trying to eat a fried turkey in one sitting.

You need to ask yourself what kind of fishing are you going to do most - pier fishing, shore fishing or boat fishing?

If it's fishing from a boat - are you going to be fishing backbay, nearshore or offshore?

If it's offshore - are you going to be trolling, surface drift fishing or bottomfishing?

If it's going to be bottomfishing - are you going to be shallow water bottomfishing (0-100 feet), bottomfishing (100-300 feet), or deepdroping (300 feet plus)

Look at it as a decision-tree, making cold hard choices in a logical progression that will get you to the answer(s) you need.

----------------------------------------------

I'm not trying to be a smartass with my answer - I'm merely trying to explain that there are many ways to spend your time fishing. Perhaps before you spend a lot of money on tackle that you may never use much, ask some of the forum regulars if you can hitch a ride - splitting fuel, bait, ice expenses. Then you can try various types of fishing and see for yourself what type of fishing will fit your temperament and budget best. At that point you can spend a lot of money on tackle, rods, reels like the rest of us have , buying gear that best fits your style of fishing.

hope this helps,

Catch

also go to the old PFF and search question in that fourm. Look more post on helping people learn about fishing there. This time of year it is gonna be the BFT. All kinds of info there about chunking, chum bombs and such. Even has pictures on how to do a lot of it.

Another thing that is GREAT to get info is go to the WED. night gatherings. People will tell you stuff there but just will not post it on here.

Thanks for the replies. I'm going to be fishing mostly from a boat but as far as inland/offshore, shallow/deep, I'm really not sure. I've gotten the same advice about trying to find someone to tag along with and just try things out. Once things settle down I'm going to try and give that a shot.

As far as these Wednesday night gatherings, where and what time are they usually?
