Default RE: New Member Question

You're absolutely right Blue Hoo. Unfortunately, I can't afford to buy up the gear that I'd like to have to handle every situation that I fish. I already have way to many (in my lovely wife's opinion) bass rods andreels. I also love inshore saltwater fishing and I've been more than a little generous with my spending on rods and reels, not to mention lures, lineand other terminal tackle. On top of that, I like to fish for King Salmon and Steelhead trout when we visit my brother in law in Michigan. Ihave aseperate tackle box for what I call my "Yankee fishing" gear as well as amassive largemouth bass box, and an ever growing inshore saltwater tackle box. Therefore, I'm forced to try to "multi-task my heavier saltwater equipment, because, as much as I love to do it, I probably do the least amount of it, compared to the others. I appreciate your opinion on not bringing my own leaders when I charter a boat for offshore fishing. You saved me from a possible mistake there.

By the way, I live in Atlanta, but I check this forum every day and drool over the fact that most of you get to do the kind of fishing that I love so much, a hell of a lot more than I do. Just let me get these two kids through college, and if that doesn't absolutely break me, I'll be joining you.

You hit that one on the head. First part of my pre-fishing festivities every weekend is jumping in, no matter what the water temp or jellyfish conditions, and cutting out line that is caught up in the props. Current's carrying me from Ono out to the Pass, barnacles are rippin me to shreds, jellyfish are branding my back and arms, damn....I hope I get a second mate working underneath me this summer. Time to pass the torch to the low guy on the totem pole...

What ReelDeal said, Mono 30-40# Ande. You don't want braid on a roller rod anyhow.

I would spool it with 65# Stren Braid with a 25' florocarbon leader attached with a Yucatan Knot.

80 lb braid is roughly the same diameter as 30lb mono. The 330 will hold about 350 yds of it and you can multi-task the rod with it. Tie on an 80lb fluoro leader (about 10 ft) with a uni-to-uni knot and you have a multi use rod. Now will the 330 put out the major drag needed to handle 80lb braid? Absolutely not, but, you will be snatching grouper and snapper out in no time. You can troll the same rod for bonito, kings, hell, whatever you feel like. 330's are very versatile reals that were designed to be affordable and be able to multi-task. I took a buddy offshore fishing for his first time 2 weekends ago. He had no clue about holding pressure with your thumb while freespooling, much less trying to remember to levelwind a reel. The 330 w/ 80lb braid was the perfect fit for him (on a roller rod none the less!) and he wore out AJ's until he couldn't take it anymore. Not many reels these days are versatile. It's a good thing when you don't have thousands to throw towards every different style of fishing there is. Give it a try, and good luck!!

Why? What harm does braid do to it?
