Default jig Q.

Just wondering if you can tie knife jigs staight on your main line or do you need a leader? I use heavy braid if that makes a difference.

I all ways use a leader 3' or so . You'll tangle less .

I use a pretty long leader for a couple reasons. If the fish makes to structure the heavy mono leader will stand up to abrasion better. I can also just cut off the jig and tie another one on fairly quickly. This can be done a few times before the leader gets too short. I've also found the the bottom couple feet get scuffed up and I can just cut it off and quickly retie. I'm pretty new to this so take that into account when reading my suggestions though.

I always use a mono leader from 6' to 12' depending on how ambitious I am. It also saves time when you get nicks in your leader and you don't have to tie another, just snip a piece and retie jig.

Instead of retieing jigs, just remove the solid ring and put it on the next jig. No retieing needed. Ive tried it everyway I could think of. I think the mono lets the jig work better and as said, no knots/tangles in the braid. Tried it with 7 strand also when the Kings were around. Had bites but not as many and after a short while it tries to coil up on you.

I agree on the mono. I have a love/hate relationship with braid. I love it for so many reasons, but damn it tangles easy and can be a pain.

When you say "solid ring", do you mean the split ring?

I figured I needed a leader. The problem I am having is: I would consider my self a good knot tier with smaller diamter line but heavy mono is kicking my butt!!! I guess if I crimped the line it would take away some of the action?

No. You should have a solid ring (welded) which you tie your main line and assist hook on, thats why most of the assists have a loop. Then split ring the solid ring to the jig. That way the fish will just be pulling on the solid ring.

Double your braid with a spider hitch and then tie you leader to it with an improved albright. Which is finished up with a 3 turn uni.

PJ, take the solid ring off and just tie a palomar knot.

My bad, I thought you were talking on the jig.
