To all of the more experienced fishermen out there. I've heard that fishing the gulf on a full moon is a bad idea because the fish have been feeding all night. Would it be a complete waste of time to give it a shot in the morning seeing that tonite is THE full moon?? Thanks for the help!!

depends on what you are targeting.
I don't think it effects the wahoo, kings, spainish, billfish, white snapper, and trigger as much as the others. You will catch red snapper of course during the day but not as much as you you would like as the night fishing. From my experience the bite cuts off around 8:30 AM with a little bite around 1PM, about a 20 minute window, then fires back up around 7PM on full moon days. Fish till 9AM for bottom fish then troll. Just my 2 cents. If you have a bunch of private spots then you should be ok. |

The advice from deeplines is right on the money. I have experienced some great bites in the middle of the day on the full moon. The thing is though why battle the heat? Take advantage of the moon and just go out in the evening. We have had a lot of fun fishing at night this week. Slick seas and a bright moon is a great combination. We have been leaving the dock at five, catching cigar minnows in the pass and fishing till midnight. You should give it a try.

You don't need any additional light to navigate on the full moon. Just be aware of the unlit bouys. If your gps shows the bouys on your map screen you are good to go. Radar is nice if the visibility is not too good. I don't go unless the seas are calm. It is no fun getting banged around in the dark. Of course you will get caught from time to time but for the most part the wind generally lays down at night.

If you are planning on fishing during the day on or near a full moon, the fish will generally bite best around noon. True they do feed at night and that's why they usually don't bite well the following morning. We have caught some of our best fish and had some of our best trips near the full moon.

I'm not crazy about the full moon and right behind it, but you should fish when you can. If you are counting on the moon for visibility, a little goes a long way, but make sure you know the moon rise and set.

I fished Wednesday [Full Moon] and Thursday.
The current was RIPPING! Hard to hold up on a spot and bottom time was not near what we needed to have real good box's of fish. ![]() ![]() ![]() I did manage my best yet Trigger. Before it was 21 1/2in long. This one was 22 1/2in long.
