I am an old warrior trying to get adjusted to fishing with a smaller boat in closer. Yesterday, we fished the I-10 bridge rubble and saw great younger fishermen pulling in some nice mangroves and beeliners. It appeared that they were using ultra light rigs and small live minnows. We had pinfish and squid and caught some but got outfished royally. I don't doubt that these guys were better fisherman.
I would greatly appreciate a bit of advice on how to best catch the mangroves and beeliners. I am proficient with a throw net and have a feeling I want to leave the dock at Cotton Bayou [Orange Beach], go out into the Bayou and catch the smaller minnows to fish for these particilar fish. By the way, we caught some nice little undersized scamp and gags out there, which is good news. My grouper fishing has sucked this year unless I went much further out in my previous boat. Happy trails. Catfish 1:bowdown |

If you can net up some small menhaden or alewives. The bayous here in pensacola are full of them. You can keep some alive if you have a good live well, if not just bag them up. The small ones you can just grab a handfull and crush them up and toss them out. The black snapper will be all over them. Just bury a small hook in one, drift it back on 15-20 pound flourocarbon leader [no sinker] and you will be on. Caution though on yourrod and reel.Don't go too ultralite because if a big guy gets on you won't be able to stop him. Small braid on your reel [10-20] and a 8-10 foot leader.

HEY JOHN JUST WONDERING HOW DID YOU GET THE BRIDGE RUBBLE NUMBERS, I ALSO CAN TELL YOU THAT THE BLACK SNAPPER LOVE SHRIMP BUT YOU HAVE TO USE A NUMBER ONE HOOK OWNER AINLY, THEY HIT AND TAKE THE BAIT FAST AND I USE A LONG LEADER AROUND 15 TO 30 DEPENDING UPON THE DEPTH IM FISHING, IDONT KNOW THE DEPTH YOU WERE BUT FOR 60 OR DEEPER I GO WITH A 3 FT, 30 POUND CAJUIN LINE LEADER WITHA 4 OUNCE SINKER WITH A 2 OR 3 SIZE HOOK. ALSO THE ALWHIVESWORK GREAT CUT IN CHUNK AND WHOLE IF YOU USE THE SMALL ONES THAK'S BRANDON.
