Default Fishing for BFT

Hey Guys,

Just wanted to know if there is any thing special that has to be done to be successful at getting blackfin tuna to the boat? We tried chunking everything we had: some chunks of menhaden, mullet, bonita, etc... No luck. I just wanted to know if maybe we werent doing something right?

Any suggestions?

Thanks in advance,

Josh

Well, without being on the boat with ya its hard to say you were doing something wrong. How did you go about chunking (how often, how many) and where at?

We cut each menhaden into about 3 pieces and chunked them out about every 1-2 minutes about 7 or 8 menhaden at a time.

We were just at the edge but a lot of people have been posting reports from the edge in the past month or so.

About what size hooks would you reccomend?

If you're going to give chunking a shot, do you try to target any sort of structure/current/temp conditions, find areas with birds working bait balls, or is any spot as good as the next? Also how many pounds of bait would you need to get a good slick going? I'd love to get out after some BFT's if my schedule would ever open up:banghead

If your goin to fish the edge anchor up on a good rock and start chunking. A flat of Menhaden should be plenty than use bonitos or kings wateveryou catch, one of the bigger tunas Ive caught was on a chunk of amberjack. Use a5/0 Mustad Demon circle hook and Start with 50lb flouro leader pay out the line so your bait falls at the same rate as the chunks throw a handful in with your biat and throw a couple more when the last ones get out of sight also make sure to bury your hook
