What is the best bait/lure to rig a pitch rod with to hook up a dolphin (mahi) that may show up on the scene? And what size mono/leader would yall suggest?

I throw the little yozuri crystal minnow and have fantastic luck, just upgrade the hooks and split rings to heavy duty. You can also throw fresh cut bait and squid.

Toss out anything! Jig,spoon, cut bait, live bait, smaller dolphin if a bull shows up,anything. They are very opportunistic hunters and will eat about anything that gets them into a frenzy. We've even caught them on bare hook. Leader, well sometimes 20-30 floro works and sometimes hooks tied to the main line works depending on how quick ya can jack them up. Big point of advice, don't use circle hooks on small chickens.

I love the 5" Storm shad swimbaits. We got into a bunch of mahi this spring and kept 10 between 6 and 10 pounds. They would fight over that storm bait like nothing I have ever seen. I had it on a spinner with about 50 lb leader.

<P class=MsoNormal style="MARGIN: 0in 0in 0pt">I like to use Bucktail jigs in yellow and red orblue and chartreuse on 2-3 foot 20-25 lbs Seagar Fluoro for smaller dolphin. I always keep a limbered up naked ballyhoo on a pitch setup ready ( 40-50 fluoro) for the bigger fish. This has always been my best bait, and they cannot pass it up a an ole ballyhoo tossed at them..
