As soon as the cobia start running, I'm going out by myself for the first time.
Any advice re: tackle, tactics, rigging, etc.? TIA for any help. Peace. |

Will do, Oscar. Just don't want to go out looking like one of the three blind mice!

Best thing to do right now is go out to the piers in Pensacola, Navarre and Fort Walton which ever you prefer and meet the people that work there and fish there. A good way to make friends especially now since there is usually less fishing and more talking on the piers now. That would be a big help for you if you are going to be fishing off the piers.
Fishing off boats is more complicated and it's best to go with an experienced crew the first time or two. Either way good luck and tight lines to you. |

I agree with Kim. You do not want to go by yourself, especially for your first time.

Full Pull is doing a cobia seminar at the ducks unlimited banquet 25 Feb. Should be a good opportunity to learn from the best if you have the chance to go. PM weatherman on here for tickets or check out his thread in the hunting forum.

Do you have a tower with controls up top? If not, anchoring up outside the second sand bar, or even in between and chumming can be a way to get them to your boat. Cobia are inquisitive fish and respond well to chum and sometimes just pop up out of no where to swim around an anchored boat. I figure this would probably be one of the easiest ways a solo fisherman can get on a fish. Have a live eel rigged up and ready to pitch before the man in the brown suit shows up because it can be damn tough to hook a slimy squirmy eel when your adrenaline is pumping at the sight of a 60lbs cobe swimming around your boat!
