Default Cobia 2010

The first cobia caught last year was 03/09/09. Seeing as how tomorrow is the 9th, when do you think we will see the first Cobia caught?

There were one or two caught bottom bumping about 15-20 miles off of Destin on a charter boat. This means that they are just beginning to hit reefs or these are resident fish that wintered in the Northern Gulf. The water temps on the beach are still not warm enough. This week should help, but I am still sticking with my 3/19 date for first fish caught that I have had for the last 10 weeks.

Another indicator - I live in Atlanta, and it is remarkable how spot on this "indicator" has been (probably will jinx it now) in the last 10 years. There is a row of dogwoods on my street. When they reach full bloom (white)then the cobia show up in Destin within 4-7 days. Usually this would have happened last week. Right now they are still bare - not even begginning to turn green , but just barely budding. Once they begin to show white, I'll give everyone the warning. Hopefully I am proved wrong this year by the cobia showing up before the bloom, but not toooptomistic...

I always used the dogwoods to tell me when the white bass run was as well.... never failed.

Hey Capt, just thought I'd let you know Fort Walton Beach is in full bloom with Dagwoods blooming down every street you take! I started to notice it yesterday when I picked up my son from school and remembered what you said. I guess the warm night we had last night combined with the rain really kicked them into gear, they were in full bloom today on the way to work! My original prediction for the first Cobia this yearis March 20th, I think that could happen if we can get past this weekend without one being caught but I have my doubts. With sunny weather in the forecast for this weekend you know there will be a ton of boats out looking!
