The first cobia caught last year was 03/09/09. Seeing as how tomorrow is the 9th, when do you think we will see the first Cobia caught?

There were one or two caught bottom bumping about 15-20 miles off of Destin on a charter boat. This means that they are just beginning to hit reefs or these are resident fish that wintered in the Northern Gulf. The water temps on the beach are still not warm enough. This week should help, but I am still sticking with my 3/19 date for first fish caught that I have had for the last 10 weeks.
Another indicator - I live in Atlanta, and it is remarkable how spot on this "indicator" has been (probably will jinx it now) in the last 10 years. There is a row of dogwoods on my street. When they reach full bloom (white)then the cobia show up in Destin within 4-7 days. Usually this would have happened last week. Right now they are still bare - not even begginning to turn green , but just barely budding. Once they begin to show white, I'll give everyone the warning. Hopefully I am proved wrong this year by the cobia showing up before the bloom, but not toooptomistic... |
