I found alady at my local flea market who has a 30T used reel in original box with all papers. I checked the reel out and everthing seems to be fine. I have no idea how old it is but its got just a few minor scratches here and there but no big deal. Shes asking 300 for it. I told her I wasnt sure about it..she said she would hold it for a few days.
What Im wondering is will this be enough reel for wahoo or tuna. Im about to start delving into bigger game fishing and I dont know much about this next level of fishing equipment. |

A 30T will handle pretty much any wahoo and most tuna. One bit of advice I might give though is to put braid backing on it with a mono topshot to boost capacity. As far as whether or not the reel is worth it I think I'd have to see it to pass judgement. That reel retails for around 450-500 depending on which version it is.

That reel will hold a bunch of 30# test, but its not worth $300. Offer her $100 and go up to $150, but you can buy a used vsw30 for around 300-350.

Look at Ebay for all your needs. I got a barely used reel for about 3/4 a good sale price.
Look off season and you could steal it. |

Enough for wahoo - yes. Tuna - IMO -maybe, yes.
I'd keep looking or get her down on the price. There's a 30W at Jimmys in FWB for $300 ($350?)... little scratched, butspooled & on a rod.I've never paid over $200 fora 30 or 30W. Ebay results for a 30T just now: http://search.ebay.com/search/search...&category0= |

I've never been a big E-bay shopper, but I picked up 2 brand new in the box TLD-50WLRSAs for $241.00 each and 12.00 shipping a couple of weeks ago. E-bay is definitely worth a look.

Guys thanks for the advice. I passed on the reel at the flea market she wouldnt budge the price. Went to ebay and scored a Penn I30 for a much better price. Got it home, It looked like new. Took it apart and the drag was pristine. It hasnever been spun. Thereis no scoring on the plates. I dont think this reel has ever cought a fish! But thats goin to change. After 20 25 years its time this reel got to work.
Thanks again |

I don't recomend buying any reels that are not the current style. you may not be able to get parts for a discontinued model of reel.

any wahoo around here, yes. tuna for you? yes. the greater majority of people on this forum when they go "tuna fishing" get into a mess of blackfin. no blackfin in the world will ever beat a 30 wide. maybe a poorly tied knot, but not the reel. i have seen plenty of yellowfin over 160 whooped on a 30 wide, and i personally was on the boat when a 209 pounder from the lump was whooped on a 4/0!!!!! on a diamond jig. if you're not tournament fishing, 30W is plenty of reel for hooters and tuners.
