Default safety with using a Generator for lights

I have a honda inverter gennie I want to use with several halogens to flounder. What are the safety issues I should think about? How can I keep from being shocked? Thanks

I've been using one for 11 years and have never been shocked. I just plug the lights in and start hunting.

I trashed a light last night and it tripped my GFI. Gennie kept running but no juice past the GFI.
