Default Sight Fishing the Surf Lightweight Report

I walked from the house to the West Jetty in Panama City Beach this morning with an Ultralight rod with IGFA 4lb, and some pomp jigs. Seen plenty of juvenile pompano, and caught 4 that were 6-8", but no keepers. Lots of Ladyfish.

When I got to the West Jetty and started back I had much better vision with the sun behind me instead of in front of me. About half way back to the State Park Pier a dark colored fish was coming down the beach. I pitched a pink crab jig in front of him and bounced it a few times as he approached. A Cobia, and It was obvious when he had seen the jig he lit up big time, and jumped all over it. I did the best I could to set the hook and stay tight to him. He ran to the first sandbar and wallowed around and I followed. He pretty much did everything he wanted to for 10 minutes or so. I just kept steady pressure on him and followed as closely as I could. I finally got him wore down to the point that he was just of the beach and much easier to work on. A few beach walkers had gathered to watch and wanted to help me with him. I asked on of the older gentlemen to try to guide him with the 2' shock leader and kinda slide him into shallow water, but let go if he get's too tight. He did an outstanding job and I got to land the fish in something like 20 minutes. I guessed him at 29-30" and released him.

There was a lady on the beach that took a picture for me, and she is supposed to email it to me. Soon as I get it I will post it.

What a Great Day.

On another note, I understand that someone caught a Sailfish on a Straw Rig from the Panama City Beach Pier. Dang.

Oh no, the dreaded tourist who is supposed to email you pics wait.

I've had 3 catches in my life now where a tourist said they would email me the pictures and I have yet to see any of them, the most regrettable being the tarpon I got from my yak this summer.

I hope she follows through for ya Curtis, great report.
