Hit the beach east of portafino with the family yesterday afternoon. They wanted to look for shells. I decided to get my line wet. Dug up a few sand fleas and set up my poles. Family got cold and went to go camp out in the car while I fished. Well I got cold as well, so I made a break to the truck to change into some warmer clothes. The wife said she could see my poles from the front seat of the truck, and would keep an eye on them. I put on the warm, dry clothes and as I walk to the side window, shes says " didn't you have two poles"? :doh Most of you know what already happened. I raced down to the beach to see the pole holder laying on the sand and a single track in the sand leading to the water. I looked out in the water and about 50ft out, I spy the end on my rod. Without hesitation, I run into the water and retrieve the rod. Good news, got the gear, better news, there's a fish on the line ! I wade back to shore and land a nice 16" pompano ! :letsparty Sweet. Of course all the tourist on the beach came over and we all had a good laugh, at my expense naturally.
The family was impressed by my heroic actions as well. ( Really, we laughed all the way home ! ) Told them I would treat them to their first pompano dinner. :hungry They loved it ! |

Nice catch! Yeah I'm sure all of us have had similar experiences. I usually bring a small sledge for the rod holders to make sure a fish or rising waves don't knock them down and always set the drag just enought to set the hook. I'm gonna try to get out there tomorrow.

That has happened to us before night fishing for sharks across from Tom Thumb on Pensacola Beach. My buddy was like "Dude, where's my rod?" We found it, but the line was stripped off. Go through your reel or have a tackle shop do it so the salt doesn't ruin it!
