Noob Question

I just picked up a cheap baitcasting combo for about 75 bucks made by Okuma. This is my first baitcaster, and the combo didnt come with any sort of manual.

I understand the star drag and line release, but there is a little button slider sort of thing that while engaged, causes the reel to click while reeled in. It makes the noise like a fish is running with your line and the drag is clicking, except that it does that when reeling in. When it isn't engaged, it doesn't make that noise and its smooth. Does anyone know what its for?

Is it the brake thing for casting to avoid bird nests? Ive tried searching for a manual online but i cant find one anywhere

If I'm not mistaken, it would be used when bait and line is out. Fish takes bait, reel clicks. Undo the clicker and reel in.

Test doing this......

1) Take clicker off (disengage) and pull line like a fish would,

2) Place clicker on (engage) and do same. Notice difference? addable notification line is being removed

You wouldn't want the spool locked while bait and line is out.

Now I could be out in left field on this, but it's late and you will get responses in the morning.

You have a leaver to lock up the spool correct?

You have a drag adjustment and a spool tension adjustment. Spool adjustment addresses your backlash question.

Ron's right, it's a clicker. Two main purposes. If you are fishing in a situation you want a fish to be able to turn and eat a live or dead bait and not feel pressure, you can leave the reel in freespool with the clicker on. This gives the spool enough tension to prevent backlashes.It is also a fantastic alarm if you are trolling and or fishing multiple rods. In big boat situations it lets the Captain and crew know when the fish is running and when the angler is winding. ZZZZZZZZZZZZzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz My favorite sound.

Ohh, okay that makes sense. So should i always switch the clicker on when i have my bait in the water, and then once i get a bite and let it run for a sec, then switch it off to start reeling?

Yeah its not my spool lock, it doesn't affect (noticeably) line coming in or coming off so it must just be a clicker. thanks guys
