The "grassflats" can be found in the inner-coastal waterway, or the "sound," as it is also called by locals. This is the water between the south side of Hwy. 98 and the north side of the barrier island known as Pensacola Beach. The water to the north side of Hwy. 98 is Escambia Bay,but this time of year the trout migrate from the river mouths and bayous at the north end of the bays down to theflats. If you are truly interested in specks, there are some great spots that usually hold fish, in the "sound," behind the Portofino condos. Do you have a boat? If so, reply and I will tell you where there are some public boat launches directly into trout country. Are you from here? There are some tactics that I have found that work better than others. Don't want to insult your intelligence, but I'm willing to share the little bit I know.

I'm telling you its painful. I fished the Atlantic and Chesapeake Bay for 5 years and dropped all that info to be a rookie again LOL... To be honest though i don't mind. Just trying ot get my feet wet again and learn the area....

I fished the Chesapeake Bay too!
To catch trout here, I'd go to Big Sabine(area behind Portofino Towers) and the flats in the woodlawn beach area. Spoons, topwaters, artificials, and live bait work real well. I have a lot of my luck walking the dog with a skitterwalk along some docks. Wait till the water warms up a bit. You'll be catching trout and reds one after another. |

Big Sabine is just a little East of Portifino. It is a huge flat, the land extends North and on the East side is the flat, right off the flat there are grass beds in 3-5 ft of water. Early morning on the flat, when it slows go to the deeper grass beds. There is a curve in the area and when the land straightens out there is a hole just off theshore, if you look for a few you can find it, there has been very good redfish days in the hole. I fish top water early, and cajun thunder poping cork with 4 inch gulps over the grass beds. 4inch will keep the dinks off a little better. Good luck let us know how you do!
