Launched at Oriole yesterday afternoon @ 3pm and headed East to check out the top water action. Pulled up shallow in between a couple of docks and began a brisk drift across the grass. Lots of bait around and the water was crystal clear. The first cast at the end of the dock enticed a nice red out but no strike so I eased the anchor in and positioned myself so that I could throw behind the end of the dock. After several casts with multiple artificials (Yo-Zuri dog-walker, gold spoon, gulp crab) I tie on ole-faithful little skitterwalk. Cell phone rings and since I should have technically still been working (general contractor) I decide to take a phone call as I make a cast behind the dock. Twitch-twitch-BAM! The lure is knocked into the air on the first strike and quickly engulfed by the second strike. I'm "holy-cowing" into the phone and my buddy gets a play-by-play as I manage to get the fish away from the dock and to the boat. Nice speck for a pic-n-release. Two or three casts later I take another phone call(this one actually is business)as I work my bait behind the boat in the liftand KABAM -this time I saw red. Straight under the dock he takes me as I'm trying my best to immediatley get off the phone in a professional manner. Free-spool, rod down, untie anchor and leave it in the water, motor around to end of dock, check pockets for wallets, finally hang up withMotormouth, jump in with my rod and begin chasing this red straight under the dock halfway to the beach before it finally leaves the dock and gets out in the grass. Shortly thereafter I Boca the red and wade back out to the still-running boat for a quick pic and release. It's been a while since I jumped in for a fish - always a good time. Long post for two fish but I had to tell the story.
Caught a couple more small specks drifting the flats then back to the house to meet the kids and wife. |

82... What a great report, obviously that is one lucky phone you got there! When it comes to landing a fish, a man's gotta do what a man's gotta do! Thanks for the great story and photos and congratulations on a nice outing.

Very entertaining report. Good to know things are starting to perk up around those docks. You ought to try some braid on your spare spool. Sometimes with the braid you can cup the spool with your hand and turn the reds away from the pilings.

I agree that braid is great for reds around docks but I was really looking for a large trout and don't like to use any braid for large specs. Smaller trout don't seem to mind if you at least have a couple of feet of flourocarbon, but the wise 'ole ladies seem to shy away from it.
Even with braid I wouldn't have had a chance of stopping that little red because of my angle to the dock. Went for an hour this afternoon on the south side of the sound and didn't see the first speck - even waded for them. Found one 20" red that ate a naked bull minow in a pot hole. Sorry no picture - it was a 20" long copper-colored fish with spots.:doh |

Nice job! Things are sure heating up in the sound. I think I saw you out there the other day, do you have a carolina skiff with a trolling motor on the front?

Great report! I got 2 bulls today in the sound as well. Slammed the skitterwalk over the grass flats.
