Thursday Afternoon: I got out in the kayak today to work the sound for anything that would bite. I put in at Oriole Beach boat ramp north of the Portofino and headed east working the northern shore with all the boat docks. 400 yards down I ran into a nice area...on the first cast I hooked up with a catfish. I threw him back and kept moving. 100 yards east of there I found myself 2 16" specks before hooking up with a nice 24" red. The red made it home with me and it was grilled redfish with asparagus and fresh tomatoes under a cream sauce for dinner.
The catfish was caught on a natural gulp shrimp. The specks and red were caught on fresh frozen shrimp with a 4/0 light circle hook/24" flouro leader under a popping cork with 10# braid. All fish were caught in 4' of water over grass beds between 1:00 and 3:00pm. High tide was at 12:51. Upon examining the stomach contents in the red I found a whole blue crab approx. 2" wide and more blue crab claws in the intestines...it always pays to know what they're feeding on and when. -Matt

Sounds like a good day! With the crappy swells offshore, I just might have to give the sound a try.

mx, Great post!!Baby blue crabs are like ribeyes to Redfish. One of my favorite bait. And, the "3 Catfish Rule" is 3 so you won't leave that spot before you catch a Red, ha!
Glad to hear you studying the contents,... cleaning for great fillets! YUM!! |
