Redfish Point 7-6-08

I had a pretty long post written but lost my internet connection and had to reboot, so I'll try to sum it up...

Went to Redfish Point with my girlfriend. We brought the portable grill- awesome. If you are a boater and don't have one get one! I picked RF Pt. thinking I'd grab a trout or red on a live pinfish while she read a novel. I spooked a trout on my way in on the trolling motor so fish were in the area.I threw the net (cheap 6 footer) and got some pinfish- I usually chum with old bread but I had chicken today. What chum do you use?

Anyway, I didn't get any takers on my pinfish under a popping cork or freelined. But, we had a great time. Here are some pics...

She is watching my rod for me while I throw the net. You can see she is on the ball!

Our set up is pictured above. You can see thatshe is pretty wound up! We like taking the boat out there because it's like we are the only ones there in paradise! We had the CD player cranking some beach tunes!

On the way in the fish were GOING OFF in the dock lights. Lots of skippies- we caught two. The trout were there but she was learning how to cast and had trouble keeping a bait in the strike zone. I find that you need to be up in the light to get a trout over a skippie. I took the time to show her some fish in some shallower lights and even spoke briefly with a happy home owner who walked out on his dock. I would not have had the boat in close to his lights had I known he was coming but he was just cleaning his boat, so we moved on with no harm done, but I still felt bad for maybe spooking his fish. We had a great time! Hope you all enjoy the post.

great report, I was checking out your pics and came across the pic ofyour boat I have one similar to it and had a ?. I see you mounted your trolling motor to the starboard side of your bow does it make trolling more difficult than if itwere in the middle of the bow? , just curious I had to make a bracket to get the motor in the middle but do not like it b/c it gets in the way of my fish box but am thinking of moving like yours if it does not matter.

no problems with the troller mounted where it is. the boat came configured for that mounting so i had the motor in when i took delivery. that motor is the highest thrust Riptide you can buy and use a 12 volt system so it struggles against the current in the ICW. we sheared the pin on the prop and it was seized in the hole so we drilled it out and now we have a vibration.the battery is an Interstateand it stays on a trickle charger so the motor should be getting enough power. i don't use my motor to troll with though- i just use it to position the boat in stealth mode, then anchor and fish.

I noticed where you said your TM was the highest thrust available in a MK Riptide, but you said you were running off of a 12 volt system. I have a 101# thrust Riptide and it runs off of a 36 volt system. I am not bashing by any means but if you have that large of a motor anything less than 24 volts is gonna cause a definite problem.According what the manual said 24 volts will achieve approximatley half the power of 36 and any feedback voltage such as that from the charging system on the outboard, converters, or chargers such as you mentioned can ruin the circuit board. As I said, I am just trying to help, not insultanybodies intelligence.

5 prongs- Thanks for replying, but it was my mistake. I should have said I have the most powerful troller you can run on a 12 volt system. What I meant was if I stepped up to the next motor I would have to add batteries. My troller thrustis around 60 lbs. I think (and I know fora fact) that it is the strongest Riptide troller you can run on a 12 volt battery the year I bought it. It's not a 101 lb. thrust- just a little plus or minus 60 lb. thrust, but that is the best you could do in 2002 if you only had one battery to power it. Thanks though...

Like I said, I was just trying to help. I don't want to see anyone have to fork out a bunch of money for a simple mistake!!! I don't know if you have priced any TM's lately but the biggest ones from 80-100# thrusts models can take a really good chunk out of a pocket book. I would hate to know that I had to go out and by another. On a side note they are great motors. I have had mine for about 2 years and it has taken a beating and never missed a lick. And I have also found it to be super efficient on batteries. I love the 36 volt system. I can run all night long and never loose any power up until about the last hour of darkness. You can't ask for much more than that, given the HELL:blownaway it is put through. If it weren't for the 360 breakaway mount I would have torn it off the boat 10 stumps ago. :letsdrink

looks like a good relaxing day. with the cloud cover probably not to hot. man that is alot of gear to tote in that boat. my prob is that i can not seem to stay out of my boat. just glad to have one i guess. great pic ofyour set up. i hope to duplicate it on sat weather permitting

I run 1 4D AC Delco wired in a series with 2 more normal size deep cycles that I believe are group 27's. As long as you have batteries that have a minimum of 125amp/hours you won't have a problem. I have found that the AC Delcos and Energizer deep cycles provide the best bang for your buck and they are also very easy to recharge.IMO,try to stay away from the generic brands such as the NeverStarts aka(Everstarts) and Throwaway aka(Stowaway) I have had nothing but problems with these.
