Default Ono Island Thursday night

I tried nightfishing the Ono Island docks for the first time last night/this am. Fished from 1am to a bit after 7. Overall, I struggled. I threw artificials such as Yozumi pins minnows, DOA, gulp shrimp, power minnows and flukes. There were fishing busting in a number of the lights, but I only caughta handful of small trout and just one legal sized trout. Hooked a couple ladyfish too.

After daybreak I ran to Ingrams Bayou for the first time. There were a lot of very small trout but no keepers.

Not sure what I was doing wrong. I was extremely quiet, even shut off my sonars. I stayed as far from the lights as I could. I had been advised to fish 10lb line and tie on directly with no leader so thats what I did.

Any tips you have are welcome. I'd like to try again this coming week. I may try shrimp but I'd prefer to stick with artificials. If I do try shrimp, will livewell pumps spook the trout?

if they are busting on the top then they are feeding. the live well will not spook them because they are their for one thing to eat. more than likley the are eating shrimp or elys. so my advise is to use those baits. use a popping cork with shrimp(live or the doa works good)so that you can keep it in the bitting column. just what works for me. oh yea if you like artificals try the lunker sauce. the trout can not resist a glow doa shrimp with the lunker sauce. hope this helps.

Pitch a live shrimp to the docks with no weight attached.

Live shrimp with just a hook. No weight, leader, or cork.

Thanks for the suggestions guys. I'd really like to figure 'em out on artificials, but I will try some shrimp next time. However, the pinfish were taking the tails off my flukes, and chewing up the gulp shrimp, so I doubt shrimp will last long out there. I'll need to hit the trout in the head with them...I guess that's just part of the game.

I agree i doubt shrimp will last out their either, iv been having the same problem trying to use live shrimp. Its a waste of time and money i would just get me some live mullet or croakers and try them. The trout bit around here have been really tuff as well. A friend of mine uses the b gulps and the pin fish gorge on those things. He:shedevil thinks hes missing bites, and i tell him thier not good bites. i fish with a high floater plastic and use a really small bullet weight pinned in place with a tooth pick. I have the plastic texas rigged. I dont have a problem with pin fish bites either.

I took my son out for a little while this am. We threw shrimp but the ladyfish were on them instantly. I know there were trout around because I saw a few busting. I got tired of retying and feeding ladyfish so we moved to another spot. We caught trout there but they were all small. Wound up with just one keeper, on our last shrimp. Caught a lot of trash fish (lizardfish, cats, ladies, croaker (too big to use as bait).

I'm not sure how to go about getting bait size croaker. If anyone has advice I'd appreciate it.
