Hello! I am traveling to Gulf Shores June 18 and was wondering if anyone could provide helpful information regarding flyfishing in and around the area. I don't know much about GS or saltwater flyfishing. I have all the equipment, just need some guidance on the best times of day, where to go, what to use, depth, water clarity, tide patterns, etc. Any help is greatly appreciated!

Call Spencer Johnson at "The Church Mouse" in Fairhope Al.
Or Mo Shavers at "Mo Fishin", Bait and Tackle in Orange Beach Al. Or Talk to Chris at "TopGun" Bait and Tackle in Orange Beach Al. Or, Go to Little Lagoon Pass and wade all over it. Great spot. And Welcome to the Forum. What do you pursue with the long rod? |

Thanks Garbo. Will they be willing to offer free advice over the phone or do I need to stop by on the way down, or both?

You should be able to get plenty of direction over the phone, but, I would stop by any one of the three or all three, as they are really good people. "The Church Mouse" is a full fledge flyshop, and Spencer is a Great person. Spencer is a great guy, and full of Flyshop knowledge.
I don't know you, so I must say this: A lot of flyfisherpeople are hung up on themselves and the act of flyfishing as if it is greater than any other type of fishing and the people that do flyfish are better people than people that fish by other methods. Spencer is not one of these people, and people that take the uppercrust stance with Spencer may possibly never know him like others do. I flyfish alot and have fished with people of this nature before, and have a tendency to only fish with them once, as well. I hope you have a great trip, If I can be of any help please let me know by PM, I have a place in Gulf Shores. |

Thanks man. I like to fish for whatever is biting. Been freshwater flyfishing with my dad since I was five, and spend most summer weekends camping and trout fishing near the streamsand rivers in Tennessee. Just had the bright idea to take up saltwater flyfishing...bought a TFO rod (9ft, 8wt), White River 270 reel (bass pro shops brand) 5/6 wt, and strapping wf8f line. Hope to make the most out of my weekend by learning as much as possible and catching a few, if any, on the rod.
