I hate ALL jackfish. I've lost too many plugs to them. If you really wanna catch them use anything in Firetiger color. I've caught them with this color by top water, crankbaiting, rubber worms, I even caught one bream fishing with my cork. he bit it and wouldn't let go so I put him in the boat. I could show you lakes on Escambia overun with them. Hate'm!

You got that right, you can lose a bunch of tackle to them. During the winter, and early spring there is nothing cooler than seeing them hit a topwater bait. I love catching them off those Zoom Horny Toads. Use a piece of 40lb test leader and a off set 5/0 or 6/0 worm hook. Throw around every branch sticking out in the water. You will know when they are there, they look like a torpedo goin across the top of the watergoin after that frog.

CCC (9/7/2008)You know, my dad and I saw what we thought was a gar while we were flyinf along in the boat on the sound side by Tiger point in Navarre, now that I look at this I guess this is what we saw, but this thing was at least 3 feet.
There is a differance between gar and jack. gar are found in salt and freshwater usually with longer pointier noses, though the biggest i have saw, about 5 1/2' are in fresh water. Jacks, shorter widermouthsare mostly found in fresh water rivers but even more so in lakes. A family friend had a lake overrun with em, we caught and neted 200 plus .They were eating all the small bream and bass! This is just my experience may not be completly correct?

Jaster is right, they can easily over run a lake and can quickly become a problem. They are very aggresive and eat just about anything. Even if they dont kill their prey, it doesnt get away without a nasty scar. So when you have a lake with alot of jackfish in it, what ends up happening is most of your bass and bream will have permanent teeth marks goin up and down em.

its been awhile but the last time i checked the state record is like 7 lbs. my cousin and me actually target jack fish. we use dressed fly line to stay out of the stumps with a float. the big ones hide in the back of creeks off rivers. they like clear water. our cork is only 10 inches from the hook, those jacks arent scared. we use4 to 5 inch bream for bait and have accidently caught some nice bass with that set up. when the jack takes your bait you calmly reach in your pocket pull out a cigarette then you get your lighter and light the cigarette, take a thoughtful drag, blow it out ask your fishing partner "should i set the hook yet" your partner answers "give him another minute" you then take another thoughtful drag and blow it out. then you ask againand your fishing partner says "he might have it" you take another drag off you cigarette, blow it out, scratch your butt, thenset the hook and hold on!!! we have come close on that 7 lbs. i think there are some records in this area.
