Tuesday, September 9
We left the dock at 6:30am in hopes of making it to a few stops nearshore for red snapper, kings, and whatever else was hungry. We had a bit of tough luck getting our own bait so we bought 24 small live cigs from Harborwalk and went on our way. It was a steep and chopped up 2-3' seas one after the other..stiff E wind. It made for a slow ride. There were baby false albacore along the beach so we stopped and clarkspooned a few into the livewell. Headed on out 10 miles. Stopped the boat on our spot. We both looked around as the wind howled in our ears and the boat rocked up, down, side to side. We looked at each other and smiled - LOL - today wasn't going to be a "fun fishing" day out there in those conditions. Turned the boat around, took a few "saltwater showers" on the way in and fished inshore. We first anchored under the Destin Bridge & proceeded to catch gray snapper on cut squid & small circle hooks. I boated my first Spadefish too! I have been trying to get a Spadefish from some of the nearshore wrecks for years - - and I got my first one from under the bridge!! lol. Bite slacked off so we moved over to the Coast Guard Station. Scott caught a huge mullet on the sabiki, then a 14" drum, then a 17" drum, and FINALLY a slot @ 5.5 lbs. =) I caught 2 THICK, FAT ladyfish. All of the drum were caught on the small live cigs on a Carolina rig with circle hooks. The ladies were caught the same way except I put the cigs under a popping cork. Water inshore was murky green and very grassy. I know we probably looked ridiculous amongst the smaller boats but I sure had an AWESOME time in the shallow water! =) ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]()

good call on the rockin and rollin. It is always a blast to fish for reds at the bridge/CG station.

Great report and nice to see some good pics. Sorry to hear it was rough today but I bet its going to be that way the rest of the week. Looks like instead of fishing this weekend I will be doing chores around the house. :clap

Those baby bonito have got to be one of the neatest fish around. My father back used to fish the destin bridge for black snapper. He was a musician and when they finished playing he would pick up some fresh shrimp and head to Destin every weekend. That was the good old days before limits. I think he mostly went down there to feed them. They can sure peel a shrimp off of a hook. Nice pics, East Pass is sure pretty.
