0-3 miles off the beach report for Wednesday: The water was calm and fairly active. There were schools of bait in the Bay near the pass and schools of ladyfish off the beach, Did not see any Spanish.
3 miles or so off shore there were schools of good sized bonita, some in large schools, one contained a huge sea turtle. The bonita would not eat including small diamond jigs, gotya, and bubble straw rigs. I did try a green top water plug(large popper) which one took and raced under the boat with drag screaming and then he cut off. After 40 minutes of throwing whatever I could find in the box with no sucess, I gave up. It was good to see something back, though. Last year the bubble/straw rig worked on almost every throw, but today, theye would not touch it. Anyone want to suggest the latest hot artificial that bonita will hit? I trolled for kings some, with negative results. |

I've had the same problem with the bonita lately. Tons of schools of them busting, butthey won't hit anything.

We've been gettingbonito by casting bubble rigswith clarkspoons on the ends instead of straws/hooks. I'm not sure if anyone else has had success with that or not -Works for us anyway.
Thanks for the report.

Try tying on a top water popper with out hooks then a couple of feet of like 20# F.C. to a very small jig (like one from a speck rig) or a fly (my personal preference). The smaller the "hook bait" is, the better. The Bobo's are probably eating on very tiny baits (rain minnows, anchovies), this trick will usually produce on even the wariest of bonitos. Definately a case of match the hatch.

White jig, no leader & reel fast as you can. Sure fire for BoBo's.
