Default What's a good rod for sheephead?

Looking for something with a soft tip to feel the bite but still enough strength to get a hook in his lip.

I have some high dollar inshore rods... but my favorite sheepshead rod was like $20.

Shimano stimula. 7'
power- medium
Action- fast

So I now use that rod more than my experience rods. Works great for all inshore species. But the tip is just right to detect a bite from a convict

Any light tackle 8 - 10 pound rod works fine. To me the important part is the hook. I have been using size 1 Matzuo octopus hooks. My theory is that the fish takes the crabs into its mouth, crushes the crab then spits out the shell. These hooks are light and sharp and usually hook the lip on the way out. I caught 13, 2 - 6 pound sheepies and a redfish in a row without loosing a hook and my ratio was 2 baits per one fish landed is 6 feet of water. I finally broke the hook when I pulled it out of #13 using pliers otherwise I could have caught my limit with the one hook.
12 pound leader works well and use the minimum weight to get you to the bottom.
These fish fight like banshees on light tackle but seldom are the rocks an issue. I recently picked up a Penn BTR 3000 mounted on a Penn rod (the one Penn matches them too). For $125 I'm impressed. I spooled it with 10 pound and it casts extremely well and has a super smooth drag. I was so impressed I went down to the tackle shop and picked up a second one.
Good luck.
