Default Newbie looking for good information/advice

I'm brand new to the area and have been fishing all my life. The problem is I've been freshwater fishing. I've never been fishing in saltwater. My wife and I just moved into the area and have steady access to fishing boats and I really want to learn the ins and outs of it all. Right now the only thing my gear consists of is a brand new rod and a net.

What kind of tackle would I need for this area?

What types of fish are typically found around here?

Where's a good place to start looking?

I'm really looking for any and all good information/advice that's out there. If anyone feels like taking a trip out on the water to fish I'd be more than willing to go out and learn, I'll buy the beer.

WELCOME to the Forum. There is TON's of good info on here in various places. One great place to look would be the inshore fishing section, and thentheres the bridge and pier section. I've been fishing the area for 30+ years and I'm always learning something new. Tight lines to you.... Tom

If you are accustomed to Bass fishing, you will fit in well targeting Specked Trout and Redfish, and using the same light weight tackle and lures. There is a lot of information on the Inshore Fishing area.

Welcome to the PFF

One of the biggest changes from fresh to salt water fishing is to realize salt water can destroy a railroad crosstie, along with lures, bearings, boat trailers.

Also salt water fishing involves hours of waiting followed by a few minutes of fast action...

I just started a few years ago and was lost. I picked up a copy of "Pat Murray's No-Nonsense Guide to Coastal Fishing" from amazon.com and it will teach you a lot. Not a great book and it is focused on Texas fishing but will give you a good discription of rigs, baits, and techniques. Plus after reading it you'll start to notice things in the bay that we didn't need to look for while bass fishing. The coolest thing aboutgetting started in saltwater is all the cool stuff you'll learn and see. Go to google earth or www.maps.live.com and find a place and go exploring.
