I am considering buying an old underground fuel tank and burying half in the ground , covering the other half with concrete and re barb with I beam and columns supporting the inside roof.
Heavy steel doors on both ends that open inward so i can not get blocked in by fallen debris. Air vent and periscope style Camera would be in the roof so I could watch the storm , all deep cycle 12 volt .. any Ideas for improvement ? this is just my basic plan without all the detail |

I have thought about something like that before! Sounds like an awesome idea, how close to the beach do you live?

I too have though of this!
I'd add a 20' vent tube. During Ivan my neighbors not in a flood zone got a 6 foot surge. In addition, in my perfect shelter I'd add a "lightning attractor" of some sort. I LOVE thunderstorms... at home under the eaves. Jim |

Agree that you might need a snorkel if you live where it is likely to flood.

Considered the Vent tube. , also considered how easy it would be to be blown or knocked down. I would have to have a water tight hatch to close it off if it was knocked off.
No Hurricane has ever brought water even close to my home , plus 1/2 the tank would be above ground. storm serge is a real possibility but it would have to completely cross NAS Pensacola at their Tower , then over the west end of Bayou Grande and another 11 foot of elevation before it got to ground level. Nothing has ever come up 1/20th of the distance so far. I think I will go ahead with this plan. Evacuation has its own safety concerns and risk. I plan to be able to lock this down Air Tight with top ventilation which would by design be a good 25' above sea level with the possibility to be locked down also. It would be nice to enter this thing just before a hurricane hit and emerge approx 2 hours after the worst has past. I hate evacuation. |

One of my kin folk burried a full size school bus underground. It is sweet!!! Gutted out and lined w/ steel. He said he was going to finish it off w/ a bathroom and a generator w/ exhaust ports going outside. It's a great redneck thing!!!!

sounds like a coffin in the making to me. Just leave town and be safe would be my suggestion.

I do own land 38 Miles from my home that might be a better place for this exact setup , perhaps a buried school bus , at least I have the tractor and equipment in place to make it happen I now have 8 grand children who live on the same bayou i live on and need a plan for Hurricanes. I guess Molino / Walnut Hill would be the place to build underground. Thanks. your post hits home even though i do not think water would ever go over the top , I will not take the chance. , nor will I get on the Highways headed out again. I know a company that is taking up old tanks and putting down Fiberglass tanks. I think I will call |
