Just bought a boat with anevinrude 200hp ocean pro on it. Can anyone tell me what type of oil goes into the lower unit? Just let it drain out and it looks black with no metal shavings in it--hopefully a good sign!! Thanks

I prefer Royal Purple full synthetic 75w 90.
It offers much greater protection and we price it the same as conventional marine lower unit oils. $12.99 a quart.

I prefer to stay with OEM. Just stay away from Lubrimatic.

FYI we only use Royal Purple synthetics for a reason. In 4 years We have had 4 lower units we serviced return with water in them. Various causes bent prop shaft, merc water pump seal failure, fishing line in prop shaft seals etc.
After repairing the leak issues and refilling the lower units with Royal Purple, ALL of these lower units have gone on to lead happy lives. IF the amount of water contamination we found in these lower units was in any other type of oil it would surely have failed!!! Royal Purple does not emulsify with water like other oils, it ENCAPSULATES it. Royal Purple uses what they call Synerloc technology, it is a wetting agent that causes the oil to adhere to metal with an incredible bonding strength. There may be water IN the lower unit but the oil is still on the metal gears, bearings and seals.
