I know there is probably somewhere on this forum where this problem has already been addressed, if so I apologize for the repeat question. Here is my problem:
I have a 1999 Scout 177 with a 1998 Yamaha 90. Recently the tilt trim motor would bog down and barely move the motor in either direction. Until now it won't do anything nor does it make any noise. The batteries are fully charged but still there is nothing, but maybe occasionally the slightest of sounds that last only moments. And now I must confess a truly stupid point, I was not aware of the number of grease fittings that should have had a lot more attention. That being said the motor does seem to move fairly easily in both directions when the "manual screw" is loosened. Would this indicate an actual tilt motor problem? Is this a difficult "self" repair? Or is it best left to the professionals? I am not a stupid man, well other than the grease fitting issue, but I wouldn't attempt to rebuild an entire engine either, if you get what I mean. Any info or help would be greatly appreciated and thanks for your time in advance. |

Do some troubleshooting on the motor. If you have a multimeter put one on the greenand one to the blueleading to the trim motor at the trim relays and see if you have power when you push the button in either direction if you have power then you need a trim motor. If you don't have a multi meter remove the wires that are running from the motor to the relays. Should be two wires. Touch one to ground and one to a power source. If it moves then the problem is at the relays if not then most likely the trim motor. If none of that works then you probably have a power problem since the relays will normal work in on direction and not the other. Pm if you have questions

From what you say, it sounds like the motor went out. Do what Metal11 said to verify. It is not hard to do, but that depends on the person. If you need someone to repair it, give me a call and I will come over to do it.
