Default Power Tilt and Trim

It looks like the power tilt and trim on my boat has worn out. (1993 Evinrude 175) It has been a little slow for some time now. The electric motor on the unit runs fine and it has fluid, but it will not raise the motor in the tilt position without assistance. It seems to work O.K. in the trim mode, and will tilt some, but seems to run out of power when trying to raise the motor in tilt mode when the angle gets to the point that it is putting some real strain on the hydraulics. The electric motor runs, it just will not lift the motor. If I hold the up switch and lift on the lower unit it will lift some, but not all the way, not enough to get it to the trailering position.

Can these units be rebuilt? Can you do it yourself? Where would I get a kit to rebuild it? Could I take it to any shop that deals with hydraulics and have it rebuilt? I am way up here in Tennessee and there is not the competition for boat parts and repair here and they want an arm and two legs for everything. (When I bought a VRO pump I got it thru Posner for over $100 less than the dealer here wanted and the local guy swore that it was impossible to buy it for what Posner charged.) I would like to be able to take the unit off and have itrebuilt and re-install it myself. If this possible?

Default RE: Power Tilt and Trim

Yes, they can be rebuilt. Depending on what is wrong and no cylinders damaged badly, it may not be too expensive to fix. I can do the repair for you if you want to ship it. It sounds like either dirty fluid, low fluid, or worn seals/check valves. Give me a call and we can discuss options. If you have a hydrolic shop near you, they should also be able to build it. Not sure if they can get all the parts they need, but you can order the ones they can't get. Talk to them and see if they would do it. If not, I will be glad to.
