Default Mounting windlass on 94 Albemarle 265

I have a 94 albemarle 265 w/bowpulpit. I just got this boat and to add a windlass. Need some guidance on installing it, as where to place it and using a bow roller.

Thanks

I have a 26 foot Shamrock 260 Express.

I'll bet your current hawse hole is port or starboard of center line 18" or so back from the bow pulpit. I'd install immediately abeam and on centerline of that hawse hole. Your current hawse hole is off centerline specifically so you can add a windlass.

I assume your pulpit has a roller already as part of the pulpit. If not, I'd not drill a hole through the pulpit but rather find an after market roller you can attach beyond the pulpit along the sides of the pulpit. Or have one made by a local welding shop.

I recommend Breeze Fabricators in Gulf Breeze.

They installed my windlass including wiring about 12 years ago on my Shammy, still works great, though I've had to change out the plastic gypsy on the winch twice and now using a chrome gypsy. I bought the cheapest windless I could. MISTAKE!

Spend the extra cash and get a free fall feature for releasing the anchor. And add a little too much chain. I use 24' of chain.

Placing the anchor perfectly is up to you. Being able to drop it quickly and nearly straight down is important makes it MUCH easier.

I don't have the free fall feature and I regret it...

Then get an anchor ball to retrieve it every time in deep water. It'll help keep your windlass from breaking down, and only cost you a couple minutes each time you retrieve it. (And your mate a bit of effort).

PS... 300' of 1/2inch rode with 24' of 3/8" chain on a 18# danforth anchor hasn't dragged me at all in 180 of water on the edge.

But the boat holds 600' of anchor rode, I have never used more than 300' of line with that set up.

Wrong size chain for a windless that will fit that size boat.

Look at the spec's on the windless. Usually 1/4in BBB or G4

Sorry, I should have said 1/4 in BBB.

Thanks,

Jim
