Hello all,<P class=MsoNormal style="MARGIN: 0in 0in 0pt">I have rebuilt the lower unit because of a broken drive shaft. After reinstalling everything, I can?t seem to get it to go into the forward gear. If I disassemble propeller shaft part and put pressure on the clutch, pushing it forward, then it goes though all the gears with no problem. I noticed the clutch, just with the propeller shaft out, rest in the natural positions. I can seem to find anything pushing it forward, to engage the forward gear.<?xml:namespace prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-comfficeffice" /><o></o><P class=MsoNormal style="MARGIN: 0in 0in 0pt"><o></o><P class=MsoNormal style="MARGIN: 0in 0in 0pt">Is there something meant to be pushing the clutch forward? oh and by the way. I am working on a Mercury 150, early 70's I think.

Does it shift into anything other than neutral when you turn the shift shaft on the gearcase? Is it not going into forward only when installed on the engine? Did you install the shift cam and the correct way? When in forward, does the prop shaft click one way and lock up the other direction when turned? How much prop shaft end play do you have? Did you shim the gearcase correctly? (this doesn't affect the shifting, just wanted to know)

<P class=MsoNormal style="MARGIN: 0in 0in 0pt">It will shift into natural and reverse when everything is installed. When in natural it spins freely, when in forward it spins freely, when in reverse it clicks one way and locks the other. With or without it being mounted to the motor. The only way I can get it to go into forward gear it to push on it from the back side pushing forward. When I do that, it goes though all the gears just fine. There doesn?t seem to be very much play in the prop when all assembled, about an 1/4 of an inch maybe a half inch. I don?t know anything about shimming anything. I have rebuilt a couple of omc lower units, so I am basing my information off of that.

Did you make sure that the shift rod is at the proper length? Find out what the shift rod length is supposed to be (from the top of the lower unit to the hole in the shift rod) and make sure that the unit is in neutral while adjusting it. If you just screwed the shift rod in then this is one of your problems.

It almost sounds like your shift rod assembly inside of the lower unit is not moving the shift shaft, which in turn does not operate the move the clutch dog. Find a diagram and make sure everything is right.

Not 100% sure but I believe that it is meant to set at nuetral and then you move it from that position to fwd or revs.

It should only have about 1/8 to just a little more than 1/8" end play. It sounds like the thrust collar on the prop shaft was not installed and you may have another issue with assembly. You should shim the lower unit when you rebuild it. There isn't really any "natural" position. Some units have a shift detent on the prop shaft and there is a half moon object under the clutch spring that will engage the detent when in neutral. Not all of them have it. The other item is your clutch also sounds like it is backwards. On really old units, the clutch was directional. Also, if one side of your clutch is ramped and the other is not, then the ramps should go to the nose (forward gear).
