go with the garmin 400fishfinder. great little machine and in your price range.
i have used mine in both salt and fresh water salt waterbeing the norm. they make transducers for both salt and fresh water. i dont know if they make a 2 in one but mine works fine in both. the salt water transducer has more power(watts). may be some one can chim in. |

The Garmin 400 is a good choice for what you are looking for. One issue you may have, if your boat has a flat bottom (or very little deadrise at the transom) is interference while running on plane. On flatter hulls, especially ones with strakes or chines on the hull, air bubbles get trapped and carried down the length of the hull to the transducer. This can cause some issues with reading while on plane. It justdepends on the hull design and the transducer placement. I am a longtime forum member and local dealer. I can beat the price you mentioned...just check my website. When price checking, don't forget to add the itemto your cart to see the actualsale price, since some items have an MAP imposed by the manufacturerand can only have that price displayed until checkout.Feel free to call me with any questions.
oops...forgot to mention, free ground shipping until close of business 11/21!

I had a combo....never again. Like Ron said, if it quits, you're out both. I hated the nearly constant screen switching.....plus on split screen, you are down to 1/2 size (tiny). I vote for 2 separate units that work independently, each with it's own dedicated (full size) screen and functions. Just my $.02.... I'm no expert, and I didn't even stay at a Holiday Inn Express last night! Good luck!

that made me laugh tom. i have to agree. my combo unit went out so i just got a new fishfinder because the gps part of my old machine was still working. best thing to ever happen. having two large screens is way better than the split thing.
