Default Evinrude 115 on a triton 170

I am wanting to buy the above project boat from a guy. The boat and motor are 1992 model, and has been sitting outdoors not ran in probably 4 years. But it ran fine the day it was parked (4 years ago)The guy I am buying from is very trustworthy... He said that he disconnected the gas line to the engine, and hooked up a good battery to the motor and it started. It didnt turn over, but he didnt try either.

What do you guys think the chancesthat the motor will start fine with a cleaned fuel tank & lines with fresh gas? The motor looks good under the cowling. Without looking or listening to the motor, what would you all guess some possible problems could be with it?

Compression check first. I would recommend lubricating the cylinders before spinning it over doing the check. There is a good possibility that it will run ok depending on what was done to lay it up 4 years ago. You may have to clean the carbs also. I would recommend changing the water pump and gearlube also.

That doesn't even make sense.

Cranking = turning over

Started = running

whalersailor (10/16/2008)According to NADA Triton did not start production of any boats until 1997. They did not start production of the aluminum 170 until 2003. Are you sure about the manufacturer, year, and model?
Yeah what you say makes sense... I'll look into it. But I guess what boat it is really is irrelevant since it is a motor question. :doh

I am sorry my terminology is not up to your standards... I am pretty sure you knew what I meant. The first reply to my post understood what I was asking...

This was 4yrs ago, as you say.

Put some fresh gas/mix to it and a hot battery and start it up. The muffs will be hooked up on the hose at the same time.

I'd be thinking of a new waterpump kit, as the impeller will have a set to it as well as age, but that wouldn't stop me from firing it up at the house on the muffs.

All info is important when asking questions. Stuff left out or mixed up can have a different meaning and thus have a different answer that may not be correct. It's Important.

Why would you think I'm being mean? Frustrated some times , due to lack of info.

The only one that thinks that way is WWW.Fishing. :angel
