Default Boat fixing question!

Our boat has been sitting for almost a year and i just had a chance to start working on it today. It is a 4.2 (i think) merc, i had to fix the battery connectors and wires due to rust but my question is, I got it to start after putting a gallon or two of gas in it but it only would run about thirty seconds then die. I only got a chance to try it four or five times. my question is do you think that thats normal and with some more gas and more tries it will run? or is it gonna take more work. I know that there is no way to know if i need more gas without trying it.

After sitting for a year, the carbs need to be rebuilt.

Try running a strong concentration of Sea Foam thru it. Not guaranteed to work but if you can keep it running a while , it might clean the carb enough to keep it running.

Pull the plugs and shoot a "little" motor oil in each cylinder, add Start Fresh to fuel system and top off tank with fresh gas, dump engine oil and filter and replace with new, replace fuel filter and give it a whirl. The fresh fuel might just clean out any varnish thats in the carb and keep it running good enough till ya throw some new plugs in it after burning the oil thats been shot into cylinders. Good luck, your gonna need it.
