Default bilge pump

i have a 74 20' mako. my first time in the gulf the pump went out and we were taking on water. i tried to use a hand pump but with rough seas ,two motors blowing exhaust in my face plus being just a touch hung overi was feeding the fish my dinner from the night before in no time. it has a 1100 gph rule on it now. it may just be a fuse. i havent checked yet. my question is -whats the caddy of bilge pumps. i want to keep this boat as nice and up to date as the guy that i bought it from did. i may even go with a dual pump set up just to be safe. i love to over do things. thanks

Over 20 must have 2 bilges and if it was mine I would put 2 2000gph on seperate fuses and on auto switches

I agree with zoomin, my opinion is you can't have to large of a bilge pump.

Heck, I have a 1500gph on my 15' bay/flats boat.

I now have two pumps. One 1500 on a auto switch. The other on a manual switch. Seperate batteries. Plua a manual hand pump. Iffor some reason you do lose both pumps and have a wash down installed. Youcan close the pickup ballvalve. Cut your pickup hose and use it also to get the water out. Just remember that when you need it most there will be NO one around. Plan your trips that way and you will most likely return to port. Gene

There were some threads on here about this previously and one of the mechanics suggested that we use smooth high quality hose instead of the cheap corrugated bilge hose. I was surprised at how much better the pumps work and how much drier the bilge stays without the water caught up in the hose corrugation. Looks cleaner too!

Ironic that a little boat that would be in major trouble quick with a few hundred gallons only needs one. My 18 footer has two and i'm looking for a place to mount a third.

If you have this crap as your bilge hose get rid of it.

It will break easy and slows flow. The only thing it is good for is a Dog Toy.

You want a smooth flowing hose. I use the poly hose with the reinforcement.

The problem is finding it in 1 1/8in. You will not find it local. I have seen some on Ebay in the past.

I bought 50ft straight from the manufacture [thats the smallest amount they would sell.]

I used that amount on 3 different boats.
