I have one but it would probably be cheaper to go to Auto Zone/Advance and get one from their loan a tool program. A Alpha I imput shaft will serve as one.

I don't want to assume, but you do know the correct alignment of the the shifting slide assembly and the shift shaft slot, correct?

yeah i believe i have all of that straight, when i rebuilt the engine i didn't have the motor mounts quite right so the engine threw the rubber in the engine coupler. maybe we're talkin bout the same thing. If you have advice i'm open for suggestions. thanks

correct alignment of the the shifting slide assembly and the shift shaft slot

If its not aligned correctly it will never go together. The splined shaft is easy to slide in but the allignment (above) can be a little tricky if you are not familiar with it.

Thanks for the diagrams, i have another website explaining proper alignment but this is a little better. I'm just glad it was just the rubber in the engine coupler that messed up and not the drive unit. Thanks again.
