Default 86 model 40hp Nissan

When I accelerate the motor makes a popping noise before planing off and taking off. If there are two people in my boat then one person has to go to the front of the boat to take some strain off the motor or it will not ever take off. It will stay at a speed similar to a trolling motor and just keep popping like it's not catching andtrying to go into gear. I took it to a shop and they said that "it's just loading up and those 2 strokenissan/tohatsu motors are known for that, it's only doing it because there's too much weight in the boat and it's stayin in low gear and can't go into 'high gear'"It seems like if there's too much weight then it'll just go slower, not, not go into high gear and just pop at trolling speed! Does anyone have any input on this? My boat is rated for a 50hp motor, but I figure hell if they were putting those 40's on this boat when it was manufactured then it must of beengetting the job done. I'm thinking about takingit to Posner. Any input at all would be greatly appreciated.

Also, the shop checked the compression, replaced spark plugs, and cleaned the carbuerator. The motor idles great andpurrs smoothly when there's no load on it.

I doubt it has ever been changed....i'm definitely not a mechanic, but it looks fine....although when i spin it i can tell that it's off and isnt spinning evenly, but that seems so minor.

does the motor rev up like normal when trying to take off? or is it bogging down?

i have an 89 30hp nissan and never had a popping noise when accelerating. not saying they won't though. did the shop check the prop hub for being spun. mine spun on me going across perdido bay and could only idle back to the ramp about trolling motor speed. '

if it is bogging down check for fuel supply problem. the poppping could be a lean misfire. it may as well be an electrical issue or timing.

hope it helps.

Wht you describe sounds like a spun prop hub. But that's just a guess fromt he info you have given. If the motor seems to rev up, but not go anywhere, then the prop needs a new hub. If it bogs down, then you have other issues.

When I have a load on it and accelerate it sounds like it's trying to suck gas and just isnt getting it. When it's just me in the boat and it's a calm day then it wont do it at all. Or if it's out of the water it runs like a champ. Just as soon as my buddy gets in and I pull away from the boat ramp it starts popping like it isnt getting fuel...but as soon as I have him go to the front of the boat then the popping will speed up..and then it runs great. Not knowing anything I checked the fuel line and went ahead and replaced the fuel pump and checked for any leaks. That did nothing. It's really strange and aggravating. This motor is extremely clean inside and out and has obviously been garage kept. The boat has always fired up at the first turn of the key, and if I fire it up in my yard anybody would think "man that sounds good". Until you put some weight in the boat.
