Default 4.3 W/ OMC outdrive problems

I have a 4.3 with OMC outdrive, boat has set up for a while. Picked it up real cheap, previous owner had now mech ability at all. Little work motor runs like a top. Replaced water pump on outdrive and replaced oil, bellow tubes and all gaskets. Ran great first time out. This past weekend took off great, ran 20 minutes and rpm's began to rise then no thrust. Rpm's shot up, boat wouldnt move. Let cool down and would go at idle speed but nothing more. Any help would be appreciated.

Sounds like a bad prop hub. Pull the prop and look at the back side and you will probably see melted rubber. Take it to the Prop Shop on Navy Blvd. 455-0060.

Thanks for the reply. I dont think its the prop. We put another one on yet it was smaller, it did the same thing. Think it may be mechanical

Check the drive gear lube for metal. If it looks clean, pull the outdrive and check the splines on the drive shaft. If there are slivers of metal on it the engine coupler is bad. If the engine got hot at the same time this happened, the coupler is probably the culprit. You mentioned you let cool down in the first post. i missed it the first time I read it.

Thanks that what I was thinking it would be. I am glad for the second opinion. Wills marine dont have it but said they could order it. Do you have any one in mind to pick it up from or that will order it. I would be more than happy to use who you recomend for the help you gave
