Default RE: Who knew there was a lost hydrogen bomb off the Georgia coast for 50 years?

I was a little skeptical as well, but the Pentagon offical on the program did confirm that the bomb had been in factlost, but he said that its plutonium fuse was not inserted to arm the bomb when it was lost, but that the uranium part and the explosives that actually creates the fission that createsan atomic explosion was in fact present. The show stated that in spite of what the Pentagon now said, the plutoniumfuse was believed to be a part of the bombbecause a military plane that crashed later was in fact caring a fully ready H-bomb. They said the reason it was never foundwas because it in an area with a deep mud bottom and it wentabout 10 feet into the mud, but I suspect it was destroyed on impact even if it hit the water. It was dropped from more that a mile up so I bet it was essentially destroyed.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hydrogen_bomb

Even it was "complete" at the time it was lost, the physicsnecessary for it to actually reach nuclear yield is dependant on internal hardware that: 1) would not havesurvived intact after being dropped from that distanceand 2) wouldhave degraded after 48 years to the point that it wouldn't do anything more than produce a "dirty" conventional explosion.

Me too.

I promise you if there was a real bomb there they would still be actively looking for it.

Actually now sailors can say "There are no nuclear weapons aboard Navy ships."

Until Reagan and the fall of the Iron Curtain, we were only allowed to say... "I cannot confirm nor deny the presence of nuclear weapons aboard my ship"

BOTH ot those quotes were and are true.

THAT is a no $hitter.

Jim

Important to note that JAPAN would not allow nukes in country, yet the Midway, the Coral Sea, then Kitty Hawk, now George Washington were all based at Yokosuka, Japan.

Hence the statement, "I cannot confirm nor deny..."

Now, sailors can honestly say "There are no nuclear weapons aboard my ship".

NO secrets, just factual statements.

PPS....Some Japanese are still not pleased with a nuke powered ship based in Japan
