within a few hours?? if i was you i would wait until scallop season and head toward Cape San Blas.. i went last year fora overnight trip and it was a blast. i wish i woulda had alot longer to spend there. its a beautiful place plus you get to spend all day snorkeling and collecting great tasting shellfish. fun for the entire family!! you can find these little suckers in 2 feet of water so the kids can do it too. then if you feel like gettin out of the water, early in the am or just before sunset, you can take the family on a nature walk and see tons of deer.

Maybe head North and let the kids play in the snow. If they never made a snow angel, or threw a snow ball, or made a snow man, they would love it.
Just drive North, find the snow, get a hotel and play!! NO famous tourist spot, just any old small town to hang out in. |

Depends on what you like to do. Oak Mountain State Park just south of B-ham is a cool place. 3 1/2 to 4 hour drive. Camping, Cabins, lake with canoes and paddle boats, world class mountain biking, BMX track if your kids like bikes, petting zoo, hiking trails with water falls, wild bird nature preserve and recovery. If you need some city stuff, B-ham is 18 miles up the road. Maybe take the kids to the top of the Vulcan statue one night, killer view over the lit city.

I'd consider New Orleans as well. Lots of stuff to do there besides Bourbon Street. Zoo, aquarium, streetcars, paddlewheel, historic tours, French Market, and of course, great food!
